The Relationship Between Attachment Patterns and Resistance in Psychotherapy

The primary aim of this study was to explore the relationship between patterns of attachment and the manifestation of resistance in the psychotherapeutic process, as well as their influence on the therapeutic dyad between therapist and client. The study involved a single therapist–client pair; however, standardized questionnaires were administered only to the client. A phenomenological research approach was employed, focusing on phenomenological description of the client’s lived experience within the therapeutic process. Data were collected through a semi-structured interview, as well as through the use of the ECR-R and the Relationship Questionnaire (RQ), which were used to assess the client’s attachment style and patterns of behavior in close relationships. The findings suggest that specific attachment patterns may influence the form and expression of resistance during psychotherapy. These observations are consistent with several psychological theories that emphasize the relational and affective dimensions of resistance within therapeutic work. The study may serve as a preliminary basis for future research employing more detailed and direct methodological approaches in the exploration of attachment dynamics and resistance in psychotherapy.
